The price trend for betaine stood firm in the global market owing to the robust demand from the pharmaceutical sector. Betaine is obtained from the sugarbeets via the liquid chromatographic separation method. Hence, the price of sugarbeets directly impacts the prices of betaine in the market. The price of sugarbeets averaged 11 RMB/kg in the Chinese domestic market.

Betaine or trimethylglycine is a naturally occurring substance in the human body involved in several functions, most notably homocysteine metabolism. A higher homocysteine (amino acid) level in the bloodstream indicates vitamin deficiency.

Natural betaine is manufactured from high-energy feeds such as sugar beet molasses. Due to its high protein content, it is an essential component of animal feed to negate heat effects and maintain the water balance. DuPont de Nemours Inc., in association with Tereos (a key player in the primary processing of sugar beet molasses), has set up a sugar distillery in France, which is the largest source of natural betaine.

According to FAO, this year witnessed 8% and 20% inflation in food and feed prices, respectively. In the global market, sugar beet molasses prices suddenly increased during February due to the Russia-Ukraine confrontation.

Betaine's price increase was attributed to supply chain disruptions and heightened freight charges. The price jumped from 265-280 EUR/MT in May to approximately 300-325 EUR/MT in June 2022. Betaine price trend skewed towards the higher end as a result of the elevated costs of inputs.
