The HyPilot project's primary objective is to validate Hystar's one-megawatt (MW) containerized PEM electrolysers under realistic field conditions. The project is set to be completed by the end of 2023 at the Kårstø Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland, Norway.
ABB joins industry leaders Equinor, Yara, and Gassco in contributing to the project. ABB will provide low-harmonic insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) rectifiers and DC-DC converters to regulate the electricity supply, ensuring the effective operation of the electrolyser in the field. ABB will also offer on-site support and expertise in Norway throughout the project's duration.
Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, highlighted the project's significance, stating that HyPilot represents a crucial milestone for the green hydrogen industry, uniting leading industry players behind Hystar's ultra-efficient electrolysers.
During a 10,000-hour trial period, operators will collect data to demonstrate the cost-effective and reliable production of green hydrogen using renewable energy sources, such as wind power, addressing the intermittent nature of renewables.
The results of the HyPilot project are expected to showcase how Hystar's advanced electrolysers can reduce the cost of large-scale green hydrogen production, providing performance data across various operational scenarios for long-term commercial operation validation.
Chris Poynter, Division President of ABB System Drives, emphasized ABB's technology's impact on minimizing network harmonic content and maximizing efficiency, contributing to lowering the levelized cost of green hydrogen production, a critical factor in accelerating its adoption.
