The Malaysian palm oil imports have surged by 353%, showing a significant growth rate reaching up to 92,961 metric tons from 20,513 metric tons between January-April 2023. Despite the restrictions imposed by the Nigerian government on accessing the foreign exchange for crude palm oil while closing the country’s borders, Nigeria has been standing as one of the major importer countries to import palm oil from Malaysia.

Nigeria has a high demand for palm oil, which is much higher than that of the total supply provided by local suppliers. Hence, the country imports palm oil on a large scale. The managing director of Palmtrade and Commodities Development Nigeria Ltd has stated that the investments made by the government of Nigeria in the palm oil industry are relatively low. Hence, the experts predict that the import activities for Malaysian palm oil will keep increasing over time.

Despite its regular efforts to increase palm oil production at the local bodies, Nigeria is facing unavailability of sufficient palm oil. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the country produced around 1.4 million metric tons of palm oil in 2022 but couldn’t meet the demands leading to the need for imports. In the past five years, about 25% of the total palm oil consumed by Nigerians was imported. As a result, the government is facing issues with the availability of oil products, which is directly influencing the prices of palm oil in the Nigerian market. The situation has impacted the stagnant growth rate of palm oil production while affecting the livelihood of the farmers.

The decreased demand rates and the rising production of palm oil have led to the rapid decline of the rates of palm oil in the global market during the month of May. The solution for this shifting price trend and supply rates can be addressed by investing in the palm oil production sectors. Strengthening the palm oil plantations while adopting better agricultural practices would empower local palm oil production at a high rate. These initiatives would help build the demand-supply gap while ensuring an affordable value for the crucial commodity.

According to Procurement Resource, Malaysian palm oil imports to Nigeria have significantly increased. The inability to fulfil the demand-supply gap in the Nigerian market is enabling a surge in the palm oil business in Malaysia.
