In June 2023, OMV Schwechat Refinery's petrochemicals unit underwent its legally mandated six-year inspection, termed as a "Turnaround." This comprehensive maintenance procedure involved cleaning, inspecting, and updating plant components to ensure their continued efficient and sustainable operation. Following the successful completion of this inspection, the refinery resumed its full operations, prioritizing safety and minimizing disruptions for the local community.
Notably, the fuel production units underwent inspection in 2022, maintaining near-total productivity during this petrochemicals turnaround. The most recent shutdown primarily impacted units responsible for producing plastics intermediates, specifically the ethylene, butadiene plant, and the catalytic cracker.
The immense scope of this Turnaround was managed with the help of not just the 900-strong workforce of the OMV Schwechat Refinery, but also approximately 4,000 workers from 50 affiliated companies. Together, they committed over 1.2 million working hours. The meticulous process entailed the inspection and maintenance of 18 furnaces, 121 columns/reactors, 513 heat exchangers, 684 tanks, 3,000 fittings, and 1,800 safety valves. Repairs were conducted at roughly 1,140 pipeline points, and about 500,000 bolts in the petrochemicals unit were replaced.
