For the highest in seven months and significantly higher than June 2023 by over 60%, Indian palm oil imports jacked up incredibly in July. India registered the palm oil import of 1.09 million metric tonnes in July. As per Solvent Extractors’ Association of India, the mean imports of edible oil for 2021-2022 (marketing year) were recorded at 1.3 million tonnes. Additionally, edible oil imports were 1.3 million tonnes while 6,83,133 tonnes for palm oil imports in the month of June, which now reached a ginormous figure of 1.09 million tonnes in July.

Request Access For the Latest Price Trends of Crude Palm Oil

The expansive gap between palm oil and its counterparts, soy-oil and sun-oil, has motivated refiners to accelerate purchases in anticipation of upcoming festivals, according to Sandeep Bajoria, CEO of Sunvin Group, a consultancy specializing in vegetable oils. As of September shipments, crude palm oil is priced at $910 per tonne (inclusive of costs, insurance, and freight to India), a notable difference as opposed to the prices of crude soy-oil at $1,050 and crude sunflower oil at $1,010, as reported by dealers.

The surge in soy-oil prices over the past month is attributed to production challenges in the U.S. and dwindling exports from leading supplier Argentina. Concurrently, sunflower oil prices escalated after Russia's exit from the Black Sea grain agreement, remarked a dealer from a global trade house based in New Delhi.

The Black Sea region dominates global sunflower oil production and exports, responsible for 60% of output and 76% of exports. Despite rising stocks causing a price drop in palm oil, its affordability continues to attract price-sensitive Asian buyers, particularly from India, China, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In fact, China's palm oil imports surged by 48% in July compared to the previous year. However, as palm oil's appeal continues and exports increase, its price advantage over other oils may diminish. This is anticipated due to the potential reduction in stockpiles in major producers like Malaysia and Indonesia.

Tension between Malaysia and the EU

In early August, exports of Malaysian palm oil surged by 17.5%. However, tensions have risen between Malaysia, a leading producer, and the European Union due to a recent EU law aimed at curtailing deforestation-linked products, including palm oil. While environmental activists point fingers at the palm oil industry for massive deforestation in Southeast Asia, countries like Malaysia and Indonesia advocate for their sustainability certification standards. In response to which, Malaysia was understandably disquieted and disconcerted getting as far as asserting not to contribute in exportation to the EU. However, the EU in response affirms that its regulation is not a direct ban but rather a universal measure against products causing deforestation, regardless of their country of origin.

According to Procurement Resource, in July 2023, India's palm oil imports spiked by 60% to 1.09 million metric tonnes, driven by the price disparity with soy-oil and sun-oil. The Black Sea's dominance in sunflower oil and geopolitical shifts further impact global prices. Tensions escalate between Malaysia and the EU over a new deforestation-linked regulation, but the EU clarifies its policy is not a targeted palm oil ban.
