The prices of natural gas have risen by 26.26% in the second quarter of 2023 but still mark a low of 37.47% when compared to the rates in December 2022. It is studied that by the end of June 2023, the prices of natural gas were noted at around $2.798 per MMBtu. The price trend has shown a slow curve during the month of July and August, despite the hot climate conditions faced by the U.S. during this period. In general, demand is directly proportional to prices, though that was not the case in this matter.

In the current market, the natural gas rates are below $3 per MMBtu. The prices are stable for now but may fluctuate soon, showing huge curves anytime. Over the upcoming weeks, the summer would end, bringing winter on board with the peak heating season, marking the most volatile period for NYMEX natural gas.

A year ago, in August 2022, the price of natural gas peaked at over $10 per MMBtu, ever since 2008. The past twenty years price chart depicts a huge drop, which marks the rates falling by 74% from a high of around $10.028 in the month of August 2022 to a low of $2.60 in August 2023. At a point in the month of April 2023, the prices hit $1.946; however, the rates didn’t go lower.

Last year the prices in the U.S. market skyrocketed to the highest in the last 14 years during August. It was during the Russia -Ukraine war period when Russia stated the reduction of supply to the European countries if they supported Ukraine. This threat caused natural gas prices to go up to an all-time high in 2022. Additionally, the warmer winter has led to a decrease in demand, ultimately contributing to a slight drop in the price range. Similarly, the U.K. natural gas trades showed a hike in March 2022, marking a record high, and returned to the existing prices that were marked before the war conditions.

Ever since the month of March 2023, the prices oscillated between $2.249 and $2.911 and marked a mid-value of the trading range at $2.577 on August 4, 2023. Predictions state that the curve out to January 2026 may give an upswing during January 2024, marking the prices above $3.70 per MMBtu. Seasonality plays a key role in setting the price trends for natural gas, hence, as the demand increases during the winter, the price trajectory for natural gas soars too. Anticipations mark the prices to grow in the coming days. As on August 4, the delivery rates of natural gas were marked 45% higher, which is to be delivered on January 2023, than the prices for the gas, to be delivered on September 2023.

Studies report that the U.S. stored up to 3.001 trillion cubic feet of natural gas on July 28, 2023, which is 22.4% more than the storage quantity marked in the previous year in July. The amount of natural gas stored is 12% more than the usual amount stored during this period in the last five years, marking ample availability.

According to Procurement Resource, predictions state that the price trends of natural gas may give a high curve in the coming days. Amid the ample availability, political and social tensions, which may cause sudden and effective changes in the price trends of the key commodity, the prices are expected to rise in the global market trade.
