Castor Oil Market Trends

This blog provides detailed information about Castor Oil, including its classification, manufacturing process, industrial usage, price trends, and important players in the market.

Castor Oil: Definition

Castor oil is obtained by pressing vegetable oil from castor beans. It appears colourless or pale yellow coloured liquid and has a peculiar taste and smell. The boiling point of castor oil is 313 °C (595 °F), and its density is 0.961 g/cm3. It contains a blend of triglycerides, of which around 90 percent of fatty acids are ricinoleates.

The other important components in this oil are Oleic acid and linoleic acid. Castor oil and its byproducts are applied in producing soaps, lubricants, hydraulic and brake fluids, paints, dyes, coatings, inks, cold-resistant plastics, waxes and polishes, nylon, and perfumes.

Moreover, it is a popular source of ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated, 18-carbon fatty acid. Food-grade castor oil is used in food additives, flavourings, candies as mould inhibitors, and packaging. The high demand for castor oil in the food industry tends to affect castor oil prices.

Castor Oil Production Process

The production process of castor seed oil adopts mechanical oil pressing technology. A series of seed processing equipment is connected to continuous oil extraction, which may save castor oil production costs, primarily. Castor seed consists of around 30 – 35 percent oil. The extraction procedure starts with the removal of the hull from the castor seeds and is done with the help of a castor seed dehuller. After the hull is removed from the seeds, they are cleaned using seed cleaner equipment to remove all impurities.

Further, the cleaned seeds are heated using a steam-covered kettle to eradicate moisture which would later support extraction. These cooked seeds are dried before the beginning of the extraction process. Subsequently, the castor seeds are crushed with a screw oil press machine to help in the extraction of oil. This phase is called pre-pressing. This process is made to repeat several times before it is finally ejected from the press in the form of castor cake.

Later, the castor oil is heated in the reaction vessel, followed by an open steam injection to aggravate the content of moisture. This starts the water hydrolysis reaction that thickens the sludge. The sludge is then allowed to settle down in the reaction vessel and is accumulated in the sludge pans. In the final stage, the cylindrical vessel with an open top and conical bottom is used for conditioning and degumming raw castor oil to get the commercial grade castor oil.

Industrial Uses of Castor Oil

Castor oil is used as a feedstock to produce a variety of chemicals, including sebacic acid, undecylenic acid, and nylon-11. Lithium grease production consumes a huge amount of castor oil. Castor oil is also extensively utilised as a bio-based polyol in the polyurethane sector. In addition, the food sector employs food-grade castor oil to produce additives, flavourings, candies, and packaging.

Moreover, it has several usages in other industries such as transportation, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and manufacturing. Furthermore, castor oil is also popularly used in producing biodiesel, adhesives, brake fluids, dyes, humectants, leather treatments, lubricating greases, machining oils, and paints, among others. Such distinct and extensive use of castor oil impacts the overall castor oil price trends.

Castor Oil Prices: Market Trend and Forecast

North America

North America became one of the major consumers of castor oil due to the rising consumption of bio-based plastics, lubricants, diesel, and cosmetics in the region. There is a huge demand for biogenic constituents in automotive, textile, packaging, paint, and construction industries which is leading to the growth of the market in North America.

Additionally, growing demand for castor-based supplements to foster the healthy growth of hair and skin is also anticipated to propel the expansion of the market in the region. Other factors that are helping in the growth of the castor oil market in the region are the launch of new products and focus on bringing down the carbon emission.

Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific accounts for the dominant share in the castor oil market. The high demand in the region is because of rising consumption and production of castor oil. In Asia Pacific, castor seeds are grown in the tropical countries of India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Pakistan, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Philippines, and Indonesia and the semi-arid regions of China, Japan, and South Korea, with India being the largest producer and exporter of castor oil.

Europe

There is an anticipation that the European market will grow further in the near future. This is mainly because the region has become the second-largest consumer of castor oil globally and it imports predominantly from nations like Brazil, Malaysia Mexico, and China for its local consumption.

The increase in the demand for castor oil is primarily because of the rising consumption and favourable government regulations regarding the use of bio-based chemicals. Hence, both manufacturers and consumers are shifting their preference for bio-based chemicals in the European region.
