This report presents a detailed cost analysis of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid production from sodium phenolate using Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, followed by subsequent addition reaction. Initially, sodium phenolate (the sodium salt of phenol) is treated with carbon dioxide at high pressure and temperature to obtain sodium salicylate. The obtained sodium salicylate is then treated with sulphuric acid to carry on addition reaction, thus, resulting in the formation of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid.
