This report presents a detailed cost analysis of 5-nonanone production from levulinic acid (LA) using catalytic processing. Catalytic processing of LA to 5-nonanone takes place in a single reactor with two catalytic beds in a cascade arrangement. The process results in the formation of 5-nonanone with a mixture of hexanone, heptanone, n-nonane, n-butane and pentanoic acid as by-products. Further processing of pentanoic acid is required to separate it from 5-nonanone and obtain 5-nonanone as a final product.
