This report proffers a comprehensive cost evaluation of the production of Carbomer (polyacrylic acid) by catalytic oxidation of propane in the gaseous phase. In this process, propylene or propane is sent to an evaporator for gasification, after which it is sent for catalytic oxidation to give acrylic acid and by-products.
The reaction products and an absorbing solvent are taken into absorbing equipment that yields an aqueous solution of acrylic acid followed by the distillation, thus giving high-purity acrylic acid. The thus obtained acrylic acid is then sent into a polyacrylic acid production plant, where the heat recovered from acrylic acid production is utilized to purify the polyacrylic acid, finally producing highly purified polyacrylic acid.
