This report presents a detailed cost analysis of chloroprene rubber production from butadiene and chlorine through an integrated process. The integrated process involves a vapour phase butadiene chlorination process, followed by the free-radical emulsion polymerisation. Firstly, chlorination of butadiene takes place to produce 1,4-dichloro 2-butene and 3,4-dichloro 1-butene.
The 1,4-dichloro 2-butene isomers produced are converted into 3,4-dichloro 1-butene isomers, which are further dehydrochlorinated. The dehydrochlorination takes place in the presence of caustic soda, producing chloroprene and sodium chloride. Finally, the chloroprene produced undergoes the polymerisation process to form chloroprene rubber as the final product.
