The reactants needed for the synthesis of dimethyl ether can be produced using sustainable energy sources like sun, biomass, wind, etc. Biomasses such as energy crops, agro-residue, forest residue, etc. can be gasified to produce a syngas stream that is fed into one or two-step DME synthesis process.
The hydrogen steam in the syngas mixture can be produced in an electrolyser using electricity generated from renewable energy sources, like photovoltaic and wind farms, and then is blended to CO2 and CO. In this way, renewable energy may be easily transported, stored, and used because it is “stored” in DME.
