The synthesis is initiated by reacting acetaldehyde with Grignard reagent, which gives methyl acetate as a product. The product is further hydrogenated in the presence of hydrogen to yield methyl propanoate. The reaction is further processed by the hydrolysis of methyl propanoate, which gives hydroxylamine as an intermediate, which, in reaction with formaldehyde, results in the formation of glyoxime. The glyoxime is then reduced using lithium aluminium hydride and produces dimethylglyoxime as the final product.
