This report provides an extensive cost evaluation of EDTMP production from phosphorus acid via a modified Mannich-type reaction. The manufacturing process of EDTMP starts with mixing phosphorus acid with concentrated hydrochloric acid in the presence of a nitrogen atmosphere. The next step is the dropwise addition of Ethylenediamine dihydrochloride to the acid mixture, followed by heating the mixture to reflux to facilitate the reaction. In the next step, an aqueous solution of formaldehyde (37%) is added dropwise to the refluxing mixture. The mixture is maintained at a temperature of 100°C under reflux for 4 hours. After 4 hours, the boiling suspension is evaporated under a vacuum to remove any volatile components and concentrate the reaction mixture. Finally, the residue is recrystallized from a water/methanol mixture to purify the EDTMP product.
