The process is conducted in the presence of potassium alcoholate to catalyze the reaction, which is prepared by adding potassium hydroxide to the alcohol. Excess water produced while processing the reaction is removed batch-wise through distillation. The reaction of acetylene and ethanol under controlled conditions yields ethyl vinyl ether as the final product.
