Eugenol Production From Steam Distillation

The essential oil is extracted from aromatic plants like clove buds, cinnamon bark, and leaves, tulsi leaves, turmeric, pepper, ginger, oregano, and thyme. Further, the essential oil is mixed with a 3 percent solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide. The reaction results in the formation of phenolic alkali salt and the insoluble component is then made to undergo steam distillation. Finally, the crude eugenol obtained is made to undergo purification processes, such as HPLC, NMR, TLC, and so on.
