The process involves taking an alkaline solution of p-tert-benzaldehyde and methanol in a reaction kettle followed by the dropwise addition of n-propanal, leading to a condensation reaction. Acid is added to the reaction after 2 hours to terminate the reaction and to regulate the pH, followed by the distillation of the products. The obtained condensation distilled tertiary butyl-alpha-methyl-cinnamic-aldehyde and methanol are hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst followed by filter pressing, purification and rectification to finally give pure lilial.
