This report provides an extensive cost evaluation of mannitol production by hydrogenation reaction. The production process of mannitol, specifically d-mannitol begins with the chemical reaction between d-fructose and d-glucose under controlled conditions. The reaction contains a 50:50 mixture of the two compounds, i.e., d-fructose and d-glucose, in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst. The process is carried at an elevated temperature ranging between 120 to 160 °C and a high pressure approximately at 70 to 140 atm. It results in the hydrogenation of the mixture and yields d-mannitol, or mannitol as the final product.
