The process is carried out by reacting methanol with nitrogen monoxide in the presence of oxygen. The oxidation is carried out under mild conditions, with a pressure of around 2–3 atm at 40 °C. The reaction finally leads to the production of methyl nitrate, which is separated from the mixture to attain the end product.
