The process begins in a distillation column, which uses the different distillation stages of the constituent compounds in the mixture to separate them. O-xylene, C9, and higher aromatics are left behind after the first distillation recovers m-xylene, p-xylene, and ethylbenzene. The remaining mixture is further redistilled to obtain O-xylene, as the desired product.
