The process involves the catalytic oxidation of o-xylene or naphthalene in a reactor followed by the introduction of a mixture of air and hydrocarbons to be oxidised, leading to the production of phthalic anhydride along with some by-products such as aldehydes in case of o-xylene as starting material and naphthoquinone when using naphthalene as the starting material. The formed products are then subjected to either solvent extraction or sublimation for extracting phthalic anhydride.
