This report proffers a thorough economics of the production of pure terephthalic acid. In this process, crude terephthalic acid is first obtained by liquid phase air oxidation of p-xylene or hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate. The crude terephthalic acid or CTA is added to an aqueous solution to form a slurry, followed by heating the CTA slurry, which is led by introducing hydrogen for the reduction step in the presence of a catalyst. The hydrogenated PTA aqueous solution is moved into a decanter centrifuge to separate the PTA, followed by drying the thus obtained PTA cake.
