It is a complex process carrying multiple steps, that begins with the extraction from chromite ores. Chromite ores are roasted with sodium carbonate at an elevated temperature measuring approximately around 1100 °C. Chromite ores are a rich source of chromium, which, on roasting with sodium carbonate, gives sodium chromate along with other byproducts. Further on leaching the mixture in water, sodium chromate is dissolved creating a solution. Finally, the prepared solution is purified to remove impurities, including hydrated alumina, etc, and gives sodium chromate as the end product.
