This report presents a detailed cost analysis of synthetic menthol production from m-cresol via hydrogenation, known as the Haarmann–Reimer process. In this process, m-cresol is first alkylated to thymol using propene, which is further hydrogenated to produce the reaction mixture. The reaction mixture undergoes fractional distillation to separate racemic menthol from it, thus, producing synthetic menthol.
