The flash point of 2-methylpyridine is around 26 degree Celsius, which classifies it as a flammable liquid that requires careful handling and storage away from ignition sources. It is miscible with water and readily soluble in common organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and ether. The compound is weakly basic in nature due to the presence of the pyridine nitrogen. The compound is considered hazardous and may cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract upon exposure. Prolonged or repeated contact may lead to more serious systemic effects, and it is recommended to use appropriate protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, while handling this substance.
