2-Naphthalenesulfonic acid is a white to light brown crystalline solid or flakes with a molecular weight of 208.23 g/mol. The molecular formula of the compound is C10H8O3S. Its melting point is around 124 degree Celsius for the anhydrous form and a density of 1.44 g/cm³ at 25 degree Celsius. This organic compound is freely soluble in water, alcohol, and ether and has a pKa value of 0.27 ± 0.10, which indicates strong acidity. The boiling point of the compound is approximately 317.43 degree Celsius. It is hygroscopic and deliquescent, as it absorbs moisture from the air. The LogP value of the compound is -0.944 at 23 degree Celsius, and it shows higher solubility in polar solvents. The compound is combustible but non-flammable, and it can exist in various hydrated forms, including monohydrate and trihydrate.
