Aluminium fluoride (AlF) is an aluminium coordination entity. It naturally occurs as a hydrate including one or more water molecules (seven molecules of water), such as oskarssonite and rosenbergite. It can also be made synthetically by treating hydrogen fluoride with alumina or aluminium oxide at 700 °C.

AlF appears to be a colourless to white, free-flowing powder or granules that has no odour. It is denser than water and has a solubility in water (25 °C equals 0.559 g / 100 mL). It is a highly stable compound that is resistant to strong solvents, like hot, concentrated sulfuric acid. It is non-flammable.

It has a melting point of 1,291 °C (anhydrous). It has a molar mass of 83.977 g/mol (anhydrous), 101.992 g/mol (monohydrate) and 138.023 g/mol (trihydrate) and a density of 3.10 g/cm3 (anhydrous) 2.17 g/cm3 (monohydrate) 3.10 g/cm3 (trihydrate). It is soluble in water, hot water, marginally soluble in alkalis and acids, slightly soluble in cold water, and insoluble in alcohol, acetone, and most organic solvents.

Aluminium fluoride is mainly used as an additive to produce primary aluminium metal and in electrolysis. It is also used as a key raw material in the production of fluoro aluminate glass, which has further applications in optical fibre like medical and fibre-optic imaging. The chemical finds application in ceramics, where it works as a primary chemical constituent for producing the final product. Other applications of the chemical boosting its market demand include in beer and wine factories to facilitate the fermentation process, to produce low index optical thin film and as a catalyst in the organic compound synthesis process.
