Properties of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate

Copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O), also known as blue vitriol or bluestone, is a bright blue crystalline solid. It has a molecular weight of 249.69 g/mol, density of 2.286 g/cm³ at 15.6 degrees Celsius, and no exact boiling point as it decomposes upon heating, losing water molecules stepwise (two at 63 degrees Celsius, two at 109 degrees Celsius, and the last at 200 degrees Celsius) before melting around 110 degrees Celsius. It has a triclinic crystal structure, is odourless with a nauseating metallic taste, and highly soluble in water (148 g/kg at 0 degrees Celsius, increasing to 736 g/kg at 100 degrees Celsius). It forms the octahedral aquo complex [Cu(H2O)6]² 4 responsible for its vibrant blue colour due to d-d transitions. It acts as a strong electrolyte, Lewis acid, and oxidising agent, readily dehydrating to white anhydrous CuSO4 upon heating and rehydrating in moist air. It reacts exothermically with water, is non-combustible, and incompatible with strong bases, hydrazinium salts, or aluminium powder.
