The liquid is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents like benzene. COD has a specific gravity of around 0.88 and a refractive index of about 1.49. It is air-sensitive and flammable with a flash point around 35 degree Celsius. Due to its chemical reactivity, COD is stabilised during storage with additives like Octadecyl 3-(3',5'-Di-tert-butyl-4'-hydroxyphenyl)propionate to prevent degradation. It is commonly handled under inert atmospheres and stored in cool, dark conditions to maintain purity and prevent oxidation or polymerisation.
