Its density is given by 1.196 g/ml3 at the standard temperature of 20 °C. Its vapor density is 6.69. Its vapor pressure is greater than 0.01 mm Hg at 20 °C. It remains stable under normal conditions. Its autoignition temperature is 490 °C. It hazardously decomposes under fire conditions and produces toxic oxides of carbon, such as carbon monoxide. It is a flammable liquid ester with a toxic nature.

It has many utilizations in the plastic as well as petrochemical industries. The compound is used as a chemical component in producing solid rocket propellants. It is also included in the formulation of insect repellants. It is a well-known chemical plasticizer that can be used in manufacturing certain varieties of plastic materials. It is also used as a solvent in organic chemistry. Moreover, it exhibits excellent water resistance and film-forming abilities. It is, hence, used in preparing cellulose acetate films, varnishes, and more.
