In an alternative method, oxcarbazepine is first converted to a vinyl acetate intermediate. Then, the obtained intermediate undergoes asymmetric hydrogenation using a preformed chiral catalyst to directly give eslicarbazepine acetate as the final product in high yield and optical purity.

Eslicarbazepine Acetate is the acetate ester prodrug of eslicarbazepine, and it acts as a voltage-gated sodium channel blocker with anticonvulsant activity. It appears as a white to almost white crystalline powder that is freely soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide and dichloromethane but practically insoluble in water. The molecular formula of the compound is C17H16N2O3, and its molar mass is 296.32 g/mol. Its density is approximately 1.3 g/cm³, and its melting point is around 183–185 °C. The boiling point of the compound is around 427.4 °C at 760 mmHg, and its flash point is approximately 212.3 °C. The compound comes with a warning signal word, as it may cause skin and eye irritation and respiratory tract irritation upon exposure. It is sold under the brand names Aptiom and Zebinix, and it is recommended to wear a dust mask and eye protection while handling the compound.
