When heated with water at around 100 °C, Ethylene Chlorohydrin decomposes to produce glycol and aldehyde. At higher temperatures, around 184 °C, it further decomposes into ethylene chloride and acetaldehyde. It can evaporate readily at room temperature and, upon heating, emits hazardous fumes of hydrogen chloride and phosgene. Direct exposure to Ethylene Chlorohydrin can damage the central nervous system and cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

Due to its poisonous and flammable nature, Ethylene Chlorohydrin has diverse applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, plastic, and biocide industries. Ethylene Chlorohydrin also functions as a solvent in various processes, including refining rosin, cleaning machines, extracting pine lignin, dewaxing, and more.
