It might act like a precursor to longer fatty acids.

Palmitic acid has a molecular weight of 256.42 g/mol. It can appear as a dry powder, liquid, or other solid material. It appears to be colourless and has white crystalline scales. It also has a distinct odour and taste. Upon heating or decaying, it produces an acrid smoke, and its fumes can lead to irritation.

Palmitic acid finds use for determining the water hardness and is also an active ingredient as an ultrasound contrast medium in echo enhancement in sonographic Doppler B-mode imaging. Furthermore, it is typically used in personal care and cosmetics products. The acid can also boost skin smoothening and is hence found in several soaps. In addition, it is a famous beeswax ingredient that can be found in many personal care products and in makeup. In addition, it is also employed for making food-grade additives, metallic palmitates, and lube oils.
