GeS acts as a 2D indirect bandgap semiconductor (1.65 eV bulk, up to 2.34 eV monolayer) with high anisotropic electron mobility (~3,680 cm²/V·s), ideal for photovoltaics, sensors, and optoelectronics. It shows moderate air stability but hydrolyses with water to Ge(OH)2 and GeO2, sublimes under vacuum without decomposition, resists oxidation, and may form GeS2 impurities at high temperatures, while GeS2 forms stable infrared-transparent chalcogenide glasses.
