Glyceraldehyde (C3H6O3, molecular weight 90.08 g/mol), a simple aldose sugar with D- and L-enantiomers (DL-form common). It appears as a white to off-white crystalline solid with a density of 1.455-1.593 g/cm³, melting point of 132-145 degree Celsius, and boiling point of ~107-129 degree Celsius (reduced pressure). It has high water solubility (~29 g/L at 18 degree Celsius), slight methanol solubility, refractive index ~1.454, and distinct optical rotations (+8.7° for D-form, 8.7° for L-form in H2O). Its aldehyde group confers reducing sugar properties, enabling mutarotation, oxidation to glyceric acid, reduction to glycerol, and crosslinking via bifunctional aldehyde-hydroxyl reactivity (pKa ~12.6).
