Glycerol formal is a mixture of cyclic acetals (4-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxolane and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxolane) derived from glycerol and formaldehyde, with the molecular formula C4H8O3 and molecular weight of 104.1 g/mol. It appears as a clear, colourless to pale yellow, hygroscopic viscous liquid with a density of-1.20–1.21 g/cm³ at 25 degree Celsius, refractive index of 1.451-1.452, boiling point of 192-210 degree Celsius, and flash point near 192-193 degree Celsius. It has low vapour pressure and moderate viscosity that support its use in high-temperature, low-volatility applications. It offers excellent solvency and miscibility with water and organic solvents, intermediate polarity for solubilising diverse compounds, high thermal and chemical stability under neutral to mildly acidic conditions, biodegradability, and low toxicity. It hydrolyses in strong acids/bases and may irritate eyes/skin, classifying it as a Xi hazard.
