While it is insoluble in water, it is slightly soluble in chemical solvents like carbon tetrachloride and is miscible with ethanol and ethyl ether. It is known for its strong fruity odor and hydrophobic nature, making it chemically neutral. This compound is naturally found in various plants, such as tea, corn, and oranges. The density of the compound is 0.82 g/cm3. However, it is also synthetically produced on a large scale through the pyrolysis of castor oil. It is potentially toxic, with a flash point of around 48 °C and an autoignition temperature of 250 °C.
