It is an ethanoate ester with a melting and boiling point of -12 °C and 250 °C, respectively. Its flash point is measured around 97 °C. The ester is miscible in water and is soluble in some of the organic solvents, including methanol and chloroform. Its density is measured around 1.07 g/cm³ at around 25 °C. Its vapor pressure is measured around 0.126 mm Hg at 25 °C. It generally decomposes when heated at higher temperatures while emitting acrid smoke and irritating fumes. It is a chemical irritant that is an ester derived from ethylene glycol and methacrylic acid.

The compound is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and a few chemicals, such as peroxides and steel. The reaction results in esterification and resulted in the production of Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate (HEMA). It can undergo polymerization to form methacrylate resins. It is an air-sensitive compound that generally remains unstable. However, it is stabilized by adding hydroquinone or pyrogallol in the presence of a metallic element, i.e., copper.
