However, it decomposes on heating and liberates highly toxic fumes of ammonium and nitrogen oxides. On the other hand, it remains incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. It is a tertiary amine oxide that is obtained by the formal oxidation of a tertiary amine with hydrogen peroxide.

It is a well-known crystalline chemical surfactant that is mainly incorporated in formulating different grades of detergent products. It is comparatively less basic than tertiary amines. It serves as a viscosity modifier or foam enhancer in manufacturing liquid surfactants and detergents.

It serves as one of the chemical components that can be used to produce personal and body care products, including shampoos and shower gels. It can also be used in preparing surface cleaners, dishwashing liquids, car washing liquids, sanitizing products, and more. It is a water-based non-ionic surfactant compatible with cationic and anionic systems. Moreover, it acts as a dye dispersant, emulsifier, lubricant, and wetting agent in producing various grades of surfactants and detergents on a large scale.
