Methyl lactate, which is also known as methyl 2-hydroxy propionate, is a colorless chemical liquid with a melting and boiling point measuring approximately -66 °C and 145 °C, respectively.

It is a flammable transparent liquid, and its flash point is measured at 49 to 54 °C. The compound is miscible in different organic solvents, including ethers and alcohols. It is a water-miscible liquid, and its density is 1.09 g/cm3 under normal conditions. Methyl lactate remains stable under normal conditions. However, it is a flammable liquid with an autoignition temperature measuring approximately 385 °C.

The compound decomposes when heated at an elevated temperature while emitting acrid smoke in the air. It is obtained by the formal condensation of the carboxylic acid group present in the lactic acid when reacted with the methanol. The methyl ester exists in two different types of isomers, mainly D and L-type.
