It has zero hydrogen bond donors, three hydrogen bond acceptors, and a topological polar surface area of 35.5 Ų. It functions as an effective UVB absorber with maximum UV absorbance at 310 nm. It contains a stereocenter and a double bond, allowing for E/Z geometric isomerism as well as R/S chirality. It appears as a clear to pale yellow viscous liquid with a density of 1.009 g/cm³. It has a low melting point of around -25 degree Celsius, enabling easy handling at room temperature. It has a boiling point of 185-195 degree Celsius under reduced pressure. It has very low water solubility below 0.1 g/100 mL at 27 degree Celsius, which enhances its partitioning into skin lipids, and excellent solubility in organic solvents like ethanol, isopropyl myristate, and DMSO.
