It can react with sulfoxides, which results in a reduction reaction and reduces the same to thioethers at around -78 °C. Its mixture with 1-iodobutane can react with red phosphorus, reducing the compound to diphosphorus tetroiodide.

It is widely associated with various chemical processes and is utilized in the chemical synthesis of its derivatives. It is also used as a laboratory reagent, which is involved in the conversion of primary or secondary alcohols to alkyl iodides on a small scale. Its usage is seen in organic chemistry. It is a crystalline substance that can be incorporated into the substitution reaction that helps in the preparation of hydroxyl compounds from alcohols. It can also be used in the production of chemicals such as phosphoric acid, idopyrazines, chemical reagents such as Grignard reagent and more.
