Product Overview

The report provides a detailed analysis essential for establishing a rotenone production plant. It encompasses all critical aspects necessary for rotenone production, including the cost of rotenone production, rotenone plant cost, rotenone production costs, and the overall rotenone production plant cost. Additionally, the study covers specific expenditures associated with setting up and operating a rotenone production plant. These encompass production processes, raw material requirements, utility requirements, infrastructure needs, machinery and technology requirements, manpower requirements, packaging requirements, transportation requirements, and more.

Rotenone is a naturally occurring chemical compound derived from the roots and stems of certain tropical plants. It is mainly used as an insecticide and pesticide in agriculture to control a wide range of insects and pests that damage crops, fruits, and vegetables. It is also applied in gardening and horticulture to manage pests on ornamental plants. It works by interfering with the energy production process in insects, which leads to their elimination. In addition, rotenone is also utilised as a piscicide in fisheries management to remove unwanted or invasive fish species from lakes and ponds, which helps restore aquatic ecosystems.

It plays an important role in aquaculture and fisheries in managing invasive fish species and parasites in fish farms. It is also used in public health efforts to combat mosquito larvae in water bodies, helping prevent diseases like malaria. Moreover, it also finds limited use in scientific research, particularly in labouratory studies related to cellular processes and neurological disorders. In the research field, it is used in labouratory studies, particularly in experiments related to neurological disorders.

The demand for rotenone is primarily driven by its application as a potent insecticide and piscicide in agriculture, aquaculture, and fisheries, which largely boosts its market growth. Its application as an insecticide in agriculture for controlling insects on crops like rice, cotton, and vegetables also promotes its demand in the agriculture sector. Its application as a fish poison in fisheries management controls invasive fish species in lakes, rivers, and aquaculture settings, further contributing to its demand in the fisheries and aquaculture industries. Its usage as a model compound for studying Parkinson's disease and investigating other neurological disorders also drives its demand in the medical research and biotechnology industries. Production methods, supplier consistency, sustainable sourcing practices, and efficient distribution networks also significantly affect industrial rotenone procurement at the global level. Additionally, its procurement decisions are also influenced by factors such as the availability of plant-based raw materials, regulatory restrictions on pesticide use, environmental safety standards, and cost considerations.

Raw Material for Rotenone Production

According to the rotenone production plant project report, the major raw materials for rotenone production include tuber roots of Derris elliptica.

Production Process of Rotenone

The extensive rotenone production cost report consists of the following industrial production process:

  1. Production from Tuber Roots of Derris elliptica: The production process of rotenone begins with the collection of the tuber roots of Derris elliptica, which are cleaned, dried, and ground into a coarse powder to expose the active compounds. Then, the powdered root material is subjected to solvent extraction, where an appropriate organic solvent is used to dissolve and draw out the rotenone from the plant tissue. The extract is filtered to remove solid residues, and the solvent is carefully evaporated to concentrate the active substance. This concentrated extract is then allowed to undergo crystallisation, during which pure rotenone separates out as a white crystalline solid. Finally, the crystals are collected, dried, and further purified to obtain pure rotenone.

Rotenone is a naturally occurring isoflavone compound found in the seeds, stems, and roots of several plants belonging to the Fabaceae family, such as Derris and Lonchocarpus species. It appears as an odourless, colourless to white crystalline solid when pure, though oxidation causes it to turn yellow to bright red in colour. The molecular formula of the compound is C23H22O6, and its molar mass is 394.42 g/mol. Its density is approximately 1.19 g/cm³, and its melting point ranges from 163 to 166 degrees Celsius, with a dimorphic form melting at 181 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of rotenone is 210–220 degrees Celsius at 0.5 mmHg. It is practically insoluble in water but is soluble in acetone, chloroform, carbon disulfide, and ethyl acetate. The compound decomposes readily upon exposure to light, air, and alkaline conditions, which causes it to lose its insecticidal activity. It is a known toxicant and is significantly more toxic when inhaled than when ingested, causing symptoms such as numbness of the oral mucous membranes, nausea, vomiting, muscle tremors, and respiratory depression. It is recommended to wear protective clothing and avoid inhaling dust while handling rotenone.
