It has cleansing properties, due to which it is primarily used in hair care products for conditioning and enhancing the hair's appearance. In properties, it is similar to behentrimonium methosulphate and cetrimonium chloride. It is soluble in water and blends with other ingredients easily.
At the normal pH of the conditioner, it is charged positively and becomes electrostatically attracted to damaged hair. It converts into quaternary ammonium in an acidic medium. It has a boiling and melting point of 208-215°C and 49-50°C, respectively.
SAPDMA (Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine) is primarily used as an emulsifier and surfactant in personal care products, particularly in hair care. It is added in shampoos or hair conditioners owing to its antistatic effect. It also acts like a mild surfactant that gets rid of build-up in the hair. It adds a soft, silky feel to the hair as it has a positive charge that offsets the shampoo's negative charge. It doesn't subdue foam and can be sued with anionic surfactants to help build up the formulation's viscosity.
