It is a lipid-based conditioning agent. It was made as a substitute for silicones as they don't break down easily, and this compound is biodegradable. At the normal pH of the conditioner, it is charged positively and becomes electrostatically attracted to damaged hair. It converts into quaternary ammonium in an acidic medium. It has a boiling and melting point of 208-215°C and 49-50°C, respectively.
