This is done by condensation and cyclisation of 1(2,4,6trimethylphenyl)ethanone with dimethyl oxalate under basic conditions. This is followed by reaction with 1,3cyclohexanedione. This intermediate spirocyclic tetronic acid is then acylated with 3,3dimethylbutyryl chloride in an organic solvent (such as toluene) using a base like triethylamine to form the final ester. After this, the reaction mixture is cooled, the triethylamine hydrochloride byproduct is filtered off, the organic layer is washed, dried, concentrated, and the residue is recrystallised to get spiromesifen.

Spiromesifen is an offwhite to lightyellow, crystalline solid with the molecular formula C23H30O4 and a molecular weight of about 370.5 g/mol. It shows low volatility and relatively low water solubility. It is miscible or dispersible only in a limited range of organic solvents and formulations rather than in water alone. It exhibits standard pesticidetype handling behaviour, being stable as a dry powder when stored cool and dry. It is a spirotetronicacidtype ester that shows esterlike reactivity, including susceptibility to hydrolysis and degradation under strongly acidic or basic conditions, high heat, or prolonged UV exposure. It is processed and stored in closed containers away from extremes of temperature and moisture to maintain potency and shelf life.
