It is moderately soluble in water and shows weak acidity with a pKa of 3.23, making it a zwitterion in solution. It is stable under normal conditions but is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and decomposes upon heating above 288 degree Celsius. It reacts with both acids and bases and is used in the synthesis of dyes and sulfa drugs.
