Zinc silicate has a molecular formula of Zn2SiO4 and a molecular weight of 222.90 g/mol. It has a density of around 4.103 g/cm3. It appears as a white powder, but the presence of impurities causes it to be yellow, red, green, or brown. It has a melting point of 1500 to 1509 degrees Celsius and a hardness of 4.5 on the Mohs scale. It is insoluble in water and dilute acids but soluble in hydrofluoric acid and decomposes in the presence of hydrogen chloride. It is incompatible with strong acids and is hygroscopic. It can be harmful if inhaled and can irritate the eyes and respiratory system.
