Allyl Alcohol Price Trend for the Second Half of 2023

Asia

The allyl alcohol prices were observed to be wavering throughout the second half of the year 2023; the Asian market, in particular, saw rapid fluctuations within the region. The Indian market behaved differently from the Chinese market as the price trend here struggled for a longer period of time.

Allyl alcohol Price Trends

The third quarter was weak for the majority of the region as the Russian oil imports were still relatively cheaper, and both countries had access to it. However, that edge started to subside quickly, and the global crude oil prices started to impact the upstream costs here as well. Despite that, the demands from the downstream chemical industries remained dull and kept the price trend downward facing. The early months of Q4 saw some improvement, but that too quickly reversed as the consumption still remained sullen.

Europe

The market prices in the European allyl alcohol industry reflected the fluctuations in the global market as well. The market here started slow at the beginning of the third quarter as the offtakes were very limited compared to the inventory stocks and supply volumes. This led to a distraught supply and demand equation. However, steadily, the gap between the supply and demand outlooks started narrowing down, and the second half of Q3 was relatively better than the first half. Albeit the situation again reversed in the fourth quarter with various geopolitical and economic disturbances coming into play, the allyl alcohol price trend again fell down.

North America

The North American allyl alcohol market was in a close alliance with the market behavior of the European market trends. The market started slowly here as well and then saw some improvements in the latter half of the fourth quarter. Further, the difficult international trade attributes of the last quarter again pivoted the price curve down. Overall, largely mixed market sentiments were witnessed.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the allyl alcohol prices are expected to continue varying in the coming months as well. Upstream costs project some hope; however, the demand support is still uncertain.

Allyl alcohol Price Trend for the First Half of 2023

Asia

The market of allyl alcohol witnessed a see-saw trend in the first two quarters of 2023 as the prices of its feedstock propylene fluctuated in the Asia Pacific region. Initially, the Chinese market gained momentum after a long period of stagnancy due to covid pandemic and the holiday season. The factories started churning products much faster than the demand, impacting the overall supply-demand dynamics. Further, the cost of crude oil and demand from the downstream sectors declined, which adversely affected the price of allyl alcohol in H1’23.

Europe

The allyl alcohol market witnessed a mixed trend in the first and second quarters of 2023. In the initial months, the prices surged as they gained support from the rising energy costs. But soon, they fell because of strong supply and weak demand of the feedstocks from the polymer sector that forced the manufacturers to reduce their operational rates.

North America

The first two quarters of 2023 witnessed an oscillating trend in the prices of allyl alcohol as the feedstock market fluctuated heavily. The market pace was initially slow as crude oil prices dipped due to abundant availability. But in the middle of the first quarter, the trend started showing signs of recovery, which led to a spike in the allyl alcohol market. However, such hikes were short-lived as soon the cost support from feedstock materials and hike in interest rates caused a collapse in the prices of allyl alcohol in the second quarter.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price of Allyl alcohol is expected to showcase an oscillating trend as the support from the feedstock materials seems to fluctuate in the foreseeable future.

Allyl Alcohol Price Trend for the Second Half of 2022

Asia

Allyl Alcohol is produced by reacting allyl chloride with petrochemical propylene. So, the price trend of Allyl Alcohol are directly related to that of propylene and allyl chloride. In H2 2022 feedstock crude oil was sufficiently available, especially, with discounted Russian oil having access to both Indian and Chinese markets. But the market demands remained so low that feedstock ease too could not keep the Allyl Alcohol market riding high. With the Chinese government imposing power rationing norms the upstream production was hindered. However, throughout time a very low-inclined market trend was observed.

Europe

A major war in the European backyard left the domestic economy struggling. The high inflation and supply chain disruptions worsened the situation further, dampening the market demands for Allyl Alcohol to an all-time low killing the market trend. But towards the mid of H2 supply chains were restored and OPEC+ policies fulfilled the crude oil supplies, hence, new demands arrived as the market activities resumed causing a surge in market trend for Allyl Alcohol.

North America

North America observed a very mixed trend for Allyl Alcohol in H2 2022. Crude oil supply was not much of a problem for America, but the striking inflation and low economic activities affected the American market trend for Allyl Alcohol. However, towards the end of Q4, market dynamics stabilized with new supplies entering the market and demand rebounding. Thus, a very mixed, fluctuating price trend of Allyl Alcohol was observed in the said period.

Analyst insight

According to Procurement Resource, the market trend for Allyl Alcohol are going to be mixed/ oscillating with market demand driving the price trend. As upstream costs are almost stagnant, demand will remain the determining factor.

For the Second Quarter of 2022

Asia

The price of allyl alcohol soared during the first quarter owing to the booming demand from the personal care and detergent industries. The supply constraints and trade bottlenecks also influenced these heightened prices. With the Indonesian government banning the exports of feedstock palm oil huge void was created in the market, and Malaysian exports could not keep up with the same.

This caused the prices to rise further in the second quarter. However, soon the export ban was lifted; with the arrival of palm oil in the market, the price trend of allyl alcohol weakened.

Europe

In line with the European market, the allyl alcohol prices soared during the first quarter and stabilized towards the end of the second quarter. With the shortages of feedstock palm oil and the trade bottlenecks in the Black Sea, the prices worsened in the domestic market. The cost of feedstock palm oil averaged 2534.15 USD/MT during the first half of 2022.

North America

The US domestic market registered a fluctuating trend during the year's first half. The prices initially soared due to high power costs and feedstock shortages but soon recovered owing to the robust market sentiment. However, the healthy downstream demands soon fizzled out because of the abnormal inflation level and speculation of a global recession.

The price of feedstock palm oil averaged 3411.83 USD/MT in January 2022, then dropped to 2004.25 USD/MT towards the end of the first quarter. The prices averaged around 4106.36 USD/MT in the US domestic market in the second quarter.
