  • Global aluminum hydroxide prices showed a mixed-to-soft trend during Q1’26 as improving bauxite availability from Guinea eased raw material pressure, while war-led shipping disruptions intermittently raised logistics costs and supported temporary price rebounds.
  • Feedstock bauxite prices remained volatile as Guinea’s exports increased by nearly 25% in 2025, with more than 70% shipped to China, improving global ore supply and periodically weighing on aluminum hydroxide production costs.
  • Downstream demand from alumina, flame retardants, ceramics, and construction sectors stayed cautious across major regions, as weak alumina market sentiment limited aggressive procurement despite freight-driven cost support.

Asia

In Asia, aluminum hydroxide prices fluctuated throughout Q1’26, largely tracking movements in the upstream bauxite market. Rising ore availability from Guinea improved supply conditions across China, while expanding alumina refining capacity in China and Indonesia reduced urgency for feedstock purchases. The softer demand outlook from alumina refiners and downstream industrial sectors kept procurement activity moderate, leading to intermittent price declines. However, freight inflation linked to the Iran war and disruptions around key maritime trade routes periodically increased landed raw material costs, supporting temporary upward corrections in aluminum hydroxide prices.

Europe

In Europe, aluminum hydroxide prices moved in an oscillating pattern during the quarter due to the region’s heavy reliance on imported bauxite and alumina feedstocks. Increased West African supply reduced cargo competition and eased cost pressure at intervals, while higher marine insurance premiums and freight charges linked to Middle East tensions raised import costs. Concerns regarding potential export quotas in Guinea also created uncertainty in long-term procurement contracts, preventing sustained price declines. Weak demand from construction materials, fillers, and industrial applications further restricted buying momentum, keeping the market largely balanced between oversupply concerns and elevated logistics expenses.

North America

North American aluminum hydroxide prices remained range-bound during Q1’26 as ample global bauxite availability countered higher transportation costs. Softer alumina market conditions and cautious downstream purchasing limited upward momentum, while shipping delays and increased freight rates caused by war-related disruptions periodically tightened regional supply chains. Importers maintained conservative inventory strategies amid uncertain trade flows and fluctuating logistics costs, resulting in alternating periods of marginal increases and corrections in aluminum hydroxide prices.

About Aluminum Hydroxide

Aluminum Hydroxide is a hydroxide that is used in the metal industry to produce aluminum metal. It is also used in the chemical industry to make aluminum compounds such as aluminum chloride and zeolites. Its other application area in the pharmaceutical industry is as an antacid to neutralise stomach acid.

Aluminum Hydroxide Production Processes

  • Production of Aluminum Hydroxide via Bayer Process

Commercially available aluminum hydroxide is produced using the Bayer process, which involves dissolving bauxite in sodium hydroxide at temperatures of up to 270 °C (518 °F). The waste solid, bauxite tailings, is removed, and aluminum hydroxide is precipitated from the sodium aluminate solution that remains.
