In China, prices saw a slight uptick, particularly in the last quarter, as consumers expanded their spending budgets during the festive and holiday season. This stability was influenced by consistent product supply in the region and steady demand from industries like tetrabromobisphenol A, as well as a revival in flame retardant and chemical sectors during the period.

In Europe, tensions impacted the supply of raw materials due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas crisis, leading to a rapid decline in bronopol inventory levels and a substantial incline in its price trend. Although costly imports from Asian countries presented challenges to traders and disrupted the smooth trajectory of price movements as well as raised the competitiveness of the market due to which the domestic traders had only a small room to raise their price quotations of bronopol.

North America

In North America, bronopol pricing dynamics were closely tied to the performance of the chemical manufacturing sector. With only minor fluctuations, the bronopol price graph remained relatively stable compared to the previous quarter. The pricing dynamics of the market were also supported by the limited influx of Asian imports as drought-like conditions restricted the excessive imports. Further, consumer confidence in this sector also returned after the signs of the economic recovery in North America, giving a boost to the bronopol price trend.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price trend of Bronopol is estimated to be a favorable trend as the rising cost of feedstock materials and increasing consumer interest will cause a rise in the bronopol price trajectory.

Bronopol Price Trend for the First Half of 2023

The Asian bronopol market witnessed fluctuating price trend. The prices mostly wavered on the lower side of the price curve. Bronopol prices closely followed the price fluctuations in its feedstocks, bromine, caustic soda, and nitric acid. Given the lowered prices of feedstocks, the upstream cost pressure was reduced considerably, thereby impacting the price trend for Bronopol.

Also, the restoration of trade routes and supply chains, along with eased freight situation, further contributed to bringing the production costs down. Some occasional and short-lived fluctuations were attributed to demand oscillations. But overall, reduced upstream costs and lowered demands dominated the market for bronopol.

In a similar run, the bronopol market in Europe, too, remained oscillating. The market was riddled with uncertainties in feedstock prices and erratic downstream demand. Even as the trade normalized, the traders were still skeptical of the purchase quantities. The arrival of cheaper products from China further aided the downfall of bronopol prices in the regional markets.

North America

The price trend for bronopol registered oscillating patterns in the US domestic market. The fall in feedstock prices amid bearish demands greatly impacted the bronopol prices. Further, the looming fear of recession and the failure of many banks in the USA caused balking of buyers, given their reduced confidence in the market.

Analyst Insight

According to the Procurement Resource, the price trend for Bronopol are expected to remain volatile in the coming quarter. Given the current supply-demand dynamics, the market will strive for equilibrium, given the other variables held constant.

Bronopol Price Trend for the Second Half of 2022

Bronopol prices registered an oscillating run in H2 2022, based on the prices of its feedstocks such as bromine, nitric acid, and caustic soda (NaOH). During the initial months of H2, the Bronopol prices kept high attributing to the industrial shutdown in China and supply chain tribulations.

But soon these high prices led to demand destruction hampering the price trend for Bronopol. Even when the trade and transport restrictions stabilized, no significant impact was seen on the prices. Consumer demand too didn’t support the market dynamics. Global inflation also had a role to play in dampened demands.

With a major conflict in its background, Europe suffered an economic backlash leading to an acute energy crisis which gave rise to runaway inflation. Prices of all commodities rose to astounding levels. Initially, the prices of Bronopol increased given the supply disruptions, sufficient demand, and temporary industrial shutdowns. But soon these high prices affected the buyer’s confidence in the market further dampening the demand. Hence, due to the falling demand the price trend for Bronopol shifted towards the negative side of the scale.

North America

The US domestic market mimicked the global outlook. Initially, the prices were stable given the supply disruptions, low inventories, and sufficient end-user demands. However, soon the prices began to fall as the pricing fundamentals were affected by the reduced offtakes, hiked interest rates and looming clouds of recession.

Analyst Insight

According to the Procurement Resource, the Bronopol prices are likely to remain volatile in the coming quarter given the current economic conditions. As the demand rebounds and supply channels are cleared, the prices are expected to stabilize.

Bronopol Price Trend For the First Half of 2022

Bronopol is industrially obtained via the reaction of sodium hydroxide, calcium chloride, nitromethane, and liquid bromine. During the first quarter, the price of feedstock NaOH exhibited an upwards trend averaging 517 USD/MT FOB Qingdao. Similarly, the prices of feedstock bromine (8876 USD/MT FOB Qingdao ) and nitric acid followed in a similar manner. These high prices owing to the surging crude oil prices, caused the price trend for Bronopol to strengthen in the domestic market.

The bronopol prices registered an oscillating trend in the second quarter. While feedstock NaOH and nitric acid prices increased due to the increased demand from the fertilizer industry, the prices of bromine suffered. Also, the cautious buying attitude of buyers caused the price trend of bronopol to dip slightly; however, it stabilized towards the end of the said quarter.

The European market exhibited a similar price trend for Bronopol compared to its Asian counterpart. The price of feedstock NaOH ( 711 USD/MT FOB Hamburg)  and nitric acid (420 USD/MT FOB Hamburg) remained strong in the first half, whereas the prices of bromine suffered.

North America

The prices of Bronopol remained anchored in the US domestic market owing to the surging feedstock costs and robust demand from the downstream pharmaceutical industries. The price of feedstock NaOH averaged 626 USD/MT while that of nitric acid averaged 350 USD/MT FOB New York.

An organic substance called bronopol is employed as an antimicrobial. Despite commercial samples appearing yellow, it is a white solid. Bronopol gained popularity as a preservative in a variety of consumer goods, including shampoos and cosmetics, due to its low mammalian toxicity at in-use levels and high activity against bacteria, especially Gram-negative species. Other industrial settings, including paper mills, oil exploration and production facilities, as well as cooling water disinfection plants, subsequently adopted it as an antimicrobial.
